January – What a month! Thank you to all the labs that booked web, phone and personal demonstrations. We received great feedback and fantastic responses from all the owners and employees who viewed Excelsior. We’re also happy to see our user base expand, of course. It seems that every person we show Excelsior to has great suggestions which are helping to expand Excelsior’s feature set!

Web based VS traditional software

In the 90′s big software companies like microsoft were shipping millions of software boxes to thousands of distribution centers and then on to millions of customers through retailers and internet orders.

The first advantage of web based software is the cost savings on distribution.

Customers of major software companies would wait for their software to arrive, install it on their computers (which they hoped would keep up with the technological requirements of the software) and go out and buy patches and upgrades when ever the software had a bug or new release.

The second advantage of web based software is you do not install it. The servers that record all the data aren’t the responsibility of the person using the software. No more waiting for the software or updates and no need to spend resources on your own IT services and hardware.

Software producers would receive information from their customers over months/years, collect the data and rewrite the software to fix all or most of the issues. After the new release was finished they would distribute it and within a couple of months the customer receives they’re new almost fully functional software that they already bought a year ago, at least, until the next series of problems.

The third advantage of web based software is if there is a problem with the software it can be changed immediately pending the ability of the programmers. More importantly, the problems that one person incurs with their software is not a repeated mistake. Once the software has been amended, the next user experiences the updated version NOT the same version they were issued at the start of their subscription AND for no additional fees.

Software, due to the distribution and lengthy repeated development has an inflated price.

Web based software has a lower subscription fee instead of requiring huge amounts of capital for the software and the hardware to support it.

A new year, new challenges and new solutions!

Hasn’t 2010 hit the ground running?

Dental labs every where seem to be complaisant going along, putting in the same amount of hours every day, producing the same products everyday. I remember reading a blog about a dentist that had invested in a machine to make molds and the return on investment he received after 2 years as an answer to the financial turmoil of last year. It was a popular blog, he was very proud of  his ingenuity and entrepreneurship.

I didn’t read the blog the same way. And i’m sure a lot of dental labs didn’t read it the same way either. What does it say to a dental lab? That the future brings less customers? That orders will decrease over time? It creates questions of uncertainty.

I read the blog as an indicator to all dental labs. That the time of innovation is closer than we all assumed it was. While dental labs are putting in the same effort day after day and receiving the same results day after day, the world is changing. There are many moments through a business life when opportunities arise and the need for professional good quality work cannot be replaced by another option.

I’m talking about specialization. What is it that your dental lab provides that makes it worth the money you receive from your customers? It’s your exceptional attention to detail and quality work. Excelsior Welcomes New Labs!

Jane and Pat Goodfellow have come out of retirement (again). This time it’s also due to popular demand, but also the fact they’ve found new and innovative techniques in a web based software that they couldn’t resist sharing with Dental Labs in North America. Working their tails off for the past 12 months getting the software ready for its introduction to Canada and the US the web based Dental Lab software has been received with open arms.
